Lighting
| Reef tanks should have between 3 and 5 watts
of lighting per gallon. The lights should also not be turned on for more than 9
hours per day. Putting your lighting system on a timer makes it easy to keep your
reef's lights on a regular schedule. CRI, K (Kelvin), Spectrum, Color Temperature, etc., all refer to the type of light a product produces. The lower the Kelvin, the more yellow the light. Hence, the higher the Kelvin, the more the light appears starkly white or blue-white. Getting way up there into the 20,000K range, the bulbs can appear to glow dark blue. As a general rule, aquarium related fluorescents in regard to reef habitats should not fall below the 5500K rating. Metal halides: 150W - 175W: up to 20" deep or mixed corals with a few sps and clams placed high in aquarium. 250W: up to 30" deep with mixed corals including sps and clams. 400W: up to 48" deep or a dedicated sps and clam aquarium. |
